Ingredients:

2 cups flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons softened butter, plus 1 tablespoon melted
½ cup raisins
1 cup buttermilk

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°. Lightly grease small cookie sheet.
  2. In large bowl, sift flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Mix in softened butter with fork until mixture is crumbly. Coat raisins lightly in flour and then add to mixture.
  4. Add buttermilk and mix with fork until dry ingredients are moist. Turn out mixture onto lightly floured board.
  5. Knead gently until smooth, about 1 minute. Shape into ball and place on cookie sheet.
  6. Flatten into a 7” circle. Dough will be about 1 ½” thick. Press a large floured knife into center of loaf halfway through.
  7. Repeat at right angle to divide loaf into quarters.
  8. Bake 30-40 minutes until golden browned and hollow when tapped.
  9. Remove bread and place on cooling rack. Brush with melted butter.
